I am writing this guide in an attempt to help anyone new to the internet. Since I have been using the internet in one form or another since 1987, I am too familar with it to know for sure what you need. Therefore, I am relying on my visitors to let me know which portions of this section they found useful, and which need to be expanded. This section will be continuously updated and expanded. If you have any questions, or comments, or need any help, please drop me a line!
(Of course back in 1987 I didn't know it was called the "internet." We tended to refer to it as separate pieces such as the "usenet", the file transfer network, the shell network (telnet), etc. I didn't know much beyond how to use it and that I was connecting via a VAX terminal to the outside fringes of some sort of huge network that was somehow connected to the military.)
The internet (or "net" as it is often called today) is a loosely connected network consisting of millions of computers. To say a computer is "on the internet" means that that computer can talk to any other computer on the internet using a protocol called TCP/IP. It is not important to understand what TCP/IP means, just think of it as a language.
So the question is, what does "being on the net" mean to you? Many, many benefits! What can you do on the net? More than you can imagine! This entire section is devoted to a small subset of those benefits. New software is produced every day to expand the capabilities of the internet, so any "complete" list of the benefits would be obsolete the very moment it was finished. I am simply going to try to cover the largest, most common uses of the internet.
If you have any questions or need any help, please contact me. I will not only try to help you, I will also post my answers here in the attempt to help others.
