The World Wide Web (WWW or simply "the web") is a collection of millions of computers which provide access to information using the Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP). HTTP is another layer that uses TCP/IP as its base. Since it does use TCP/IP, it can be considered part of the internet.
What does that mean for you? Well, simply put, there are millions of "pages" of information you have access to if you are on the net. For example, this page is part of the web and is on the internet. Pages on the web cover so many different topics, it boggles the mind. On the web you can find fun, interesting pages right next to boring pages right next to offensive pages right next to extremely informative pages. You can find nearly anything you could possibly want to know about.
How do you use the web? That's a very complex question. At first it seems simple. You just use your web browser (Netscape Communicator, Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, WebTV, etc.) to view web sites. Then you start thinking, "how do I sift through these millions of sites...what if someone steals my credit card information...what the heck is a cookie..." That's when it gets complicated.
As I get time, I will not only add more articles about the web, I will also add articles about other uses of the internet, such as FTP, Usenet, etc. If you have any questions or need any help, please contact me. I will not only try to help you, I will also post my answers here in the attempt to help others.
