It's all wood and brass. I love it. Sometimes when I'm on a long trip and several hundred miles of the coast I like to put out the sea anchor, set the strobes for the night, then swim for 20 minutes away from the boat in the pitch dark. Then I turn around and swim back. Sometimes when I turn around, I cannot see the strobes of the boat :-O It's a RUSH. When I get back, rinse off the salt and pop open a cold beer, I just have to say to myself "Bob :-) you ARE ALIVE !!!" Semper Fi, Robert Zerby E-mail: doctorzerby@military.com . A few months ago I decided to try out the trapeze. I didn't know how well I would be able to do, but after just a couple swings, I was flying though the air and being caught by the instructor. I highly recommend it. And the place I went was quite affordable too. I realize that I have a LOT of work to do on my site. I found this site looking up skydiving - I just did my first tandem dive today. I am told that I was lucky because I got to go on Mike Mullins Super King Air. I guess I will have to start AFF school in the next couple of months. I also recently got my SCUBA certification. The check out dive was not much fun - a cold rock quarry with only about 3' visibility. I can't wait to go diving in the warm waters of the BVI's in August on an upcoming Windjammer trip. I also enjoy water skiing, snow skiing, powerboating and canoeing (have I covered all of your adventures yet?). Anyway I would like to suggest another adventure section - motorcycle riding. I rode my Harley to the tandem jump and on my way home I noticed a small similarity to the free fall and the feeling of the wind in your face while on a motorcycle. Nepal is a haven for adventure in the Himalaya and it has drawn hundreds of EXPEDITIONS from all over the world to conquer its high mountains. Since the historic conquest of Mt. Everest, the highest mountain on earth, by Sir Edmund Hillary & Tenzin Norgay Sherpa in the early 50’s, Nepal’s mountains have been scaled again & again by expeditions from everywhere; and this trend is ever on the rise ! SHERPA SHANGRI-LA TREKS & EXPEDITIONS PVT.LTD. Presents Nepal to you and your clients in as many varied ways of explorations as can be imagined. Some of the ways to enjoy the splendor of Nepal are described below. TREKKING: The Himalaya, the great “Abode of snow” that extends across Asia, offers the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world, & nowhere is this scenery more spectacular then in the Kingdom of Nepal. But the mountain is far from the valley of Kathmandu, so the best way to see them and appreciate their grandeur is to leave the city behind and walk to the foot of the peaks themselves. A walk through the hills of Nepal will not only give you a view of the mountains, but also take you through remote hill villages inhabited by hospitable people who truly enjoy sharing their experiences with you, We invite you to join us on a visit to these remote regions to learn more about yourself and your world & to expand your physical & cultural horizons by traveling on foot through lands about which you have only dreamed. My question to anyone who reads this is the following. For several years I'm looking for a certain trip. I would love to go first hiking down the canyons and then rafting down the colorado river! I've been looking around on the net for this combination, but it only seems to happen seperately. Does anyone have any suggestion or comments, I would love to hear them. It was really exciting! There is no any tandem jumps nor AFF nor Static Line courses here in my DZ. I had a round military canopy 82 sqr m. I left the craft at the 800 m height, and SURVIVED! After Abt 3 sec freefall I pulled and in 1 sec more I got my canopy open! Never will forget that moment, I was between the skies and the field! After 40 sec I touched the ground, dropped down my body (as I was tought) and... after my canopy filled with an air and started to drug me over the field. I managed to get it down after 20 m... I was the happiest man ever lived on Earth! With my arms burning and bleeding (wear Long sleevs when jump in Russia!), I stood there and cried like a crazy: I did it!!!! Now I got 19 jumps. I refer specifically to Wm. Brennan's comments in his "Hiking through Unionville New York" piece. As a resident of Unionville, I find this story truly offensive and uninformed. Had Mr. Brennan bothered to talk to any of the citizens (other the patrons of the bar), perhaps he would have been able to write a more intelligent piece. The inaccuracies in his article are too numerous to mention, but I can speak for many other residents of Unionville when I say that I would greatly appreciate this part of your site being taken down, as I feel it paints a rather unflattering and very unfair picture of my home town. I have already e-mailed Mr. Brennan directly, but he apparently lacked the courage to respond. In the future I would ask you to take a little time to review the facts in stories such as the one written by Mr. Brennan before they are posted for the entire world to read. Thank you for your time. Me and three of my really good friends all turn 18 like with in 3 weeks of each other so when i suggested that we go skydiving over a year ago, everyone totally agreed. I can't wait, this is gonna be totally awesome. Just one question. Does anyone know of a place we could do our tandom jump for cheap? Like in the lower $100 range? We live in northern IL, so anywhere around here would totally be awesome if anyone could think of a place. ORRR, if anyone knows of a particular place that is better than others, I would totally appreciate that too. Well, i'll tell you all how it went after the jump; that's if I still alive that is. Well, later! Qasim Rashid <xctrack21qr@aol.com> Lombard, IL USA - Wednesday, July 19, 2000 at 7:35:33 PM (MDT) Hi! I just wanted to thank you for such a wonderful site. I was serching the web for something interesting about skydiving and parachuting and your site was the first I got in altavista search engine. I am really happy to get to know people's experiences in this great sport. I myself have made only two jumps, so called beginner:)But I am going to continue it. I wanted to ask if I can put a link to your site on my own site. Thanks again Good luck and I wish you new experiences. In Winter we have here a lot of winter-swimmers, hurling around in sometimes freezing water. It"s a great challenge for the mind and the body. The good feeling after an ice-bath is unbelievable! I"m an ice-swimmmer for more then ten years. Some of us sim around ice-flakes when the water temperatur is - 3 degees, possible due to the salt-water. We stay in the water for around two minutes. We change even our clothes outdoors in windy conditions. The body needs up to 2 hours to recover from the cold, the feeling thereafter ist great! Best regards. John Marstellar Mineral Ridge, Ohio Trumbull - Tuesday, May 16, 2000 at 4:20:55 PM (MDT) Get out there, do it, who cares what anyone thinks! I've done 21 skydives now, I have a tattoo, a belly button ring and I'm 17 & female. I love going out and doing my own thing, don't get me wrong I'm not a greeny or a feral I just don't see the point in holding back because some people don't agree with it. Picture the above, a chick partying, jumping, etc. Now picture a girl who has gotten good grades all her life, is dedicated to her part-time job, plays hockey. The two visions are entirely different right, but I'm all of the above. So if you are not a fellow extremist who loves to party hard maybe you should try it before you judge people by it, cause I'm sick of copping your prejudice. It is so exciting!!!! I wasn't even scared when my lines twisted a little, I just calmly turned out of it! I have only ever done static lines and that was a year ago. So I have forced my flatmates into us all doing a tandom jump for charity in the summer. Can't wait. But once you got up, we could see the whole island! It was sooo neat! Looking down didn't scare me but my mom was afraid to. The driver dipped us down into the water(which was pretty cold). I did run across an answer to an unknown somewhere on the website in a book I picked up at the library called "The Sky People: A History of Parachuting" by Peter Hearn. It answered the unknowns in a story I saw in one of the links on your page. The story was about the guy that jumped and was "possibly killed" due to a blown faceplate. His name was Nick Piantanida and the one attempt mentioned in the article resulted in him landing in a St. Paul, MN city dump, not Chicago. The attempt described where the faceplate blew did result in his eventual death after a 4 month coma. Great articles, great information at your website ... it's been a wealth of information for my paper. I was 14 yrs old and was dumped in the Northern Territory wilderness with four others of my age with only one pocket knife, a watch, a very small first aid kit containing nothing of real use, an axe, 4 clear plastic bags, one small jerry full of water and two cups as well as a piece of thick hemp rope about 1.5m long. Also included was a walky talky radio for use in emergencies (no exceptions). Dressed in long sleeved police overals and fishermen hats, we struggled to build a shelter, clear paths, build fires (however we had nothing to lite them with), fire wood piles and piles of green leaves to create smoke with in case someone came to "rescue" us. After a night in darkness, cold, hungry and scared, we got up for an early start, the people running the camp visited and tipped out our jerry full of water the next morning. Leaving us desperately thirsty. We carried on, it was all we could do. That afternoon they lit one of our fires. Relieved we wouldn't be spending another night in darkness we thanked and thanked them. That night it rained. Our shelter didn't shelter us at all, we couldn't even all fit in it. Thank god this meant that we had someone keeping the fire happening. We dried off in front of the fire. Shit it was cold. They brought us a tarp after that. A bit late! The next morning they even gave us a jerry full of water! After that we felt we were able to continue, the water gave us hope, stopped us from fighting, and gave us enthusiasm. They are three days of my life I will never forget, three days in which I was tested, in which I was so ready to give up, if only they had let me. From those three days I have learn't to Value living. One of the V's in survival we had been told was for value living, the other to Vanquish fear and panic. I enjoyed a nice warm shower, a shave of the legs, clean clothes and a warm swag the night we got back, not to mention lots and lots and lots of water and a bit of food. None of us had an apetite for anything but liquids, sleep and showers. When I think about it seems humerous, but when I think of being back in that situation I remember our desperation for water, the cold at night, the lack of sleep, the footsteps we heard around our camp and our unanswered calls, the longing for them to radio us, just for a different voice and the longing for them to visit to know they hadn't forgotten about us in their kingdom of tarps and swags. That was two and a bit years ago and was an opportunity I'm so glad that I took. I have complete sympathy for the many y oung men over in East Timor and the refugees hiding in the mountains, for the people who have died alone lost in the bush and for the homeless Gen - Wednesday, January 19, 2000 at 6:07:28 AM (MST) This is the forth time in about a week that i've visited this site! I'm sixteen, however not entirely sweet. I used to be quiet, lets just say adolescense has changed that. As my mother says, i'm unco-operative, lazy, etc, etc. Let's just say I don't give a sh-t anymore. She says all I do is talk about jumping (skydiving) and work to support this addiction. All I have to say is at least my addictions don't involve jabbing a vein, smoking a joint or hitting the bottle on a Friday night. If only she knew what it is like to be 16 in the 90's/00's, to cop the pressures from teachers and parents, not to mention peers. I've now found my thing, jumping. When I was little I used to have this dream that I could fly, only it was so real that I almost believed I could when I woke up. I've now found the closest thing. When I think about jumping it feels like my heart's on fire, I feel winded. I am addicted. I love reading other peoples stories on skydiving, looking at photos and just thinking about skydiving, it fills my dreams, it's like having a really, really bad crush. All this in just 20 jumps. I've decided to try bunji-jumping, scuba diving and paintball and anything else. I went white water rafting when I was ten and loved it, I've been kayaking through rapids (small ones, but ones big enough to cause a rush of adrenalin), I've abseiled and rock climbed (amatuer stuff though) I just thought I'd write to say what a great site this is and to keep it up. It's great to read of other people who feel the same as me, who have the same longing to jump. Thanks valerie <hufbauer@hotmail.com> Hartwood, Viriginia USA - Monday, January 17, 2000 at 8:44:09 AM (MST) After reading everyone else's extremes, I have decided to offer my own. I'm 16, female and like many of my peers I work at a fast food joint, but unlike a vast majority of my peers I get my highs from skydiving. Here Goes, my first solo jump (written for English- school!) So here I am trying not to think about the inevitable- trying just to focus. As we get higher and higher the others begin to fall asleep, I do anything but... Suddenly we're there, at 10,000 ft directly above the drop zone and the clouds and almost ready to jump out. I glance quickly at Gary as my first instructor grips the strut of the wing and positions himself on the small step. He looks at me, gives the thumbs up sign and nod which indicates it's my turn. Gingerly I fling my arm out, grabbing hold of the strut and heave myself out onto the small step. Am I insane? I'm standing right out, right on the edge. The wind is tugging at my clothes trying to pull me off, I lean over the strut, check in, check out and it's horizon. Up. Down. Go. I do simply that, step off and just let myself go. All I can hear is the rush of wind as we are flung out and down. Too late to back out now and I'm falling, plunging at the surface of the earth at a rate of 120mph, yet I can't think about that. For a moment I can't feel anything the wind has stopped and everything else has ceased to exit, my past is forgotten and my future out of the picture. All I can feel is the present.. "PARACHUTING IS DANGEROUS" I feel a shake and awaken from my sensory overload induced coma to realise where I am, I'm plummeting at the earth at about 165 feet per second. I arch harder, as the shake from my instructor demands. I check my altimeter, wow, 9000 ft. I do two practice ripcord pulls waiting for the shake of approval from my instructors. Then I just glide toward the earth. There I am, me, Jenny swimming above the heavens, revelling in this new found freedom and filled entirely with sheer delight. This is magnificent, I can feel the adrenalin, it's pumping, swimming around my body. The wind is fierce amd pushes against me and I'm falling and falling, the earth is getting closer and closer. This is amazing. It's hard to breathe- my lungs have no room to expand. Am I really falling? I seem to be gliding or floating even, I can't possibly be falling. The ground seems so far away and I'm suspended in space. Just hanging here. I'm like a paper boat in a storm, I have no real control over my direction or movements all I can do is pull my head back, arch my back and put my arms out and, above all, pray. There's nothing to grab or hold onto, there's no stability- I'm completely surrounded by air. "WARNING THIS PARACHUTE MAY MALFUNCTION...POSSIBLY RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY OF DEATH." I check my altimeter again, oh god, I'm meant to be pulling my ripcord. Quick wave of height awareness to my JM and pull. My parachute opens without drama. Thank God. I flare to pull the slider down. This is excellent, I can see everything from up here. I glance around for the arrow and failling to see it follow my JM, who has nearly reached the ground and is zigzagging I follow him. There's the cross and the arrow. The arrow begins to spin and so I follow it. Practice one more flare and begin preparing to land. Following the batons now, I flare. Wow, I'm on my feet, I actually land on my feet. I look up and see Gary and his TM get ready to land. They're on the ground now and coming over, I bundle up my parachute and walk over to Gary. Photo time. That was excellent, the adrenalin continues to pump through my body. I put my hand out and it is as though it has a mind of it's own, I can't stop it from shaking, not that I try particularly hard. I look around kind of hazily and the world seems entirely different as I see it through different eyes. I now see it full of opportunity and light, full of new experiences and adventures. I have conquered my fear of heights and can only think of being back up there. I get back to the demountable and everyone seems to crowd around me congratulating me and asking how it went. My mind however, is in overload and I can't concentrate on their questions let alone think of responses and so I simply grin. I grin according to my mother for a whole week. That was too good for words, no hassles, no scapes or major bruising, just the sensation of pure and absolute freedom, the exhileration and yet sadness of having completed a goal and the longing for another jump. That was almost 5 months ago and I have now completed my AFF course, and done in total 19 jumps (including my tandem- completed 9 months before that). Skydiving is unreal, full of wonderful people and adrenalin. It makes life interesting and releases the stress of school and the problems of adolescence. I intend to bunji jump next, but believe it or not there is nowhere in Darwin (Australia) that does it. Anyway I have to go so as they say blue skies and soft landings. The jump was done on Aug 04th 1991 at the CSPA DZ in Yellownife North West Territories. At first the JM of the school Paul Curren (Inst B) was reluctant to let me do the dive this way but I knew this would be a record! There was another jumper on the ground named "Ted" who had a T-Shirt on that said the diving emporer. Ted had told me he had gone nude on his 50th jump...this inspired me to go buff on #1...I jumped from 3000ft with a MANTA and was jumper #3. Fortunately the DZ is an large area of sand dunes and I had a walk on landing 10ft from the target. I'm saving up so that I can learn to skydive and it's great to read about your experiences in AFF training. I must say, I'm getting more and more excited about the prospect of skydiving. I've also got a wonderful quote you might like. "Once man has tasted flight he will walk with his head turned skyward, for there he has been and there he will long to return." Erin Jayne Hudson, - Wednesday, October 20, 1999 at 11:57:46 AM (MDT) After reaching the top of the ~130' foremast on a 134' brig in 1998, I read a quote by Helen Keller that forever changed my life, "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all." Since my six-week sailing experience, I have been SCUBA diving, rock climbing, skydiving-solo, extreme mountain biking, shark and dolphin swimming, and oh so much more. I stumbled upon your site while searching the net for ideas concerning the writing of my personal statement for law school. I now have a direction on how to exactly write my statement...Adventure is something that we have to experience for ourselves, not as passersby! Thank you for your experiences and stories...there is someone in the world as daring and adventurous as myself! As a person who doesn't normally indulge in, so called *extreme* sports, this all change when i went to turkey last month... at first i tried snorkling. I know kidsplay right!! Well i wasn't exactly satisfied with that so then i signed up for a 'Try-dive' for the day. Well, i tried it and loved every second i was under water. I would have signed up for the five-day course for scuba-diving, unfortunatly, funds were short at that time. And why was this, cos next on the list, was tandom-paragliding... this to me seemed a little crazy... you pay some guy a huge amount of money to be voluntarily strapped to him and then take a running jump off the tallest mountain in southern turkey!! Yeah as if. It all started out with a night on the town, and well while not totally in control of my senses (that's what Turkish Brandy can do to you!) me and a friend signed up to do exactly what we said we wouldn't do. For a whole week we kept thinking, "What have we done!" "What have we done!" But you know what, WE DID IT!!! We floated above Oludeniz for around 45 minutes, it was just magical. I've now, thankfully, gotten over my fear for heights and want to try more... maybe a little parachuting is in need. Anyways, i just wanted to say i love your site, and reading all the stories, just makes me want to try more *extreme* experiences. Thanks. The most incredible experience of my life. I am a petite female, only 5', 110 lbs. I did a static line jump. While trying to work my way out onto the strut into 80mph winds, I fell. I was out far enough not to get hurt but I didnt get to turn and smile at my jumpmaster. He later told me that I looked like I was sitting in an easy chair, I had such a calm look on my face. I'm planning on doing it again, but practicing climbing onto the strut. Best experience of my life!!! After many years of convincing my wife to let me jump she finally gave me the best fathers day gift I ever got. The opertunity to go ski diving. After my first jump there was nothing going to stop me from jumping again. I now only have two jumps but I have promised my self that I will get my "A" licnese. I, unlike everyone else on this site, have a negative thing to say about ski diving. I love to do extreme things or anything to get a thrill. After ski diving everthing I use to do for a thrill suffers badly in comparison. Ski diving is the most exciting thing I have ever done in my life and can do nothing but look at the clear blue ski all day long. I do have one question for anybody out there who may wish to answer. I have jumped twice myself and have never jumped tandam. My goal is to freefall as soon as posible. Should I try a high altitude tandam jump? DENNIS MOORE (FLASH) <mooreisgood@yahoo.com> Hermitage, MO U.S.A - Tuesday, July 27, 1999 at 4:18:42 PM (MDT) Carl..you have a great perspective on life and it is great to read about people who have a positive view of life. The daily grind of work and the pace of the world today coupled with being constantly bombarded with conflicting messages, it is easy to lose focus in life and remember what living is all about. What I think is terrific about this site, is it reminds me that there are many exciting things to live for. Life can be exhilirating and challenges and adventures are very good for the spirit. What is key is to take initiative and get involved in these adventures. So, your site provides me with some motivation to aim for some adventuring. I've done some cool adventures in the past, whitewater rafting on Brown's canyon in Colorado, skiing in Aspen and traveling to Moscow. It might not be the most extreme adventures, but for someone who grew up in New Jersey in a suburban town, it is. However, there is so much more I want to do. Especially scuba diving. I guess like anything...you just have to go ahead and do it and set a timeline...so I will be doing that and I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again for the site and keep up your adventurous attitude. It is great to see that there are people like you out there. Society seems so focused on materialism and gaining wealth. We forget that there is much more to life. These things don't necessarily add to the meaning of life. Only experiences can do that. I mean there is nothing wrong to want a nice car and have a nice house and furniture...but this doesn't add much meaning. It may add comfort and it may provide some mental satisfaction of having assets, but it certainly does not make the person..and in your last days it will definitely not be what you look back on. Things like remembering how exhilirating it is to float through the air or be one with the ocean surrounded by its granduer and beauty or navigating the landscape of a ski slope and appreciating a mountain's stature...these are the things you will look back on....NOT the day you went to the Mercedes dealership. Some people in this world seem so immersed in their outward appearance that it diminishes their sense of self and erodes meaning in their lives. I wish more people would focus on meaning in life rather than on their status. But, we all take our own paths and I'm happy to see that you've chosen an adventurous one. I look forward to hearing more of your adventures and if you have anything that would help me get involved with diving, feel free to Email me. We used to go to the castle and drink beer and eat bratwurst. You can see the jets and planes, taking off and landing, from Ramstein just a couple of klicks away. Yes, the New is great fun and a great whitewater river. However, you made a comment about the Cheat River in Northern WV being smaller than the New. In the Spring, the Cheat offers the same caliber of whitewater as the Gauley. It is 13 miles of nearly back to back Class IV and V rapids. In the summer it slows to a more moderate run such as the upper New. However, make no mistake the Cheat is no little river. Can't say mine was even close! I had a wonderful two dive, two day experience in the Florida Keys. Took by PADI open water training in Trenton, New Jersey. When they said they were taking us for certification in a quarry in PA in early June, I said, "Not me! Having just purchased a home in the FL Keys, I said, "Give me reference papers that say I have passed by written and pool tests, and I'm outa here for certification dives!" Wasn't Patrick Henry that said, "Give me warm water or I go to the Keys instead"........or something like that! In the Keys my conditions were almost perfect and I had one of the greatest dive masters you could hope for. About a year later I read he was rated the top dive master in the middle Keys! Lucky for me. Anyway, just wanted you to know that not all experiences are as bad as yours. If you ever get to the Florida Keys and want to dive (no deeper than 40 feet and NO SPEAR FISHING), look me up. Husband can't dive, but I've hooked up with a fellow in the Keys whose wife doesn't dive. The four of us have become friends, and we enjoy the same diving preferences. I started testing my limits several years ago. I have about 88 skydives, and even pack my own canopy. Skydiving is the most profound expression of freedom. When I exit the plane...it's like stepping off the edge of the world. I liked jumping from planes so much, I decided to learn how to fly them. I should have my private pilot's certificate in 2 months. Once the weather warms, I will also go for the SCUBA certification. Which is better, PADI or NAUI? I was just browsing through web pages looking for a good skydiving page, and BOOM here it is. This past summer I went skydiving for the first time; I took my IAD course and jumped from 4000 ft. It was, to say the least, the greatest experience in the world! But, I`m sure I don`t have to tell everyone that has tried it, It is such an addiction! Two weeks after my first jump I went for a second IAD, and it was just as breathtaking as the first! I amm now taking my PFF (progresive freefall) course; unfortunately the last jump I did was at the end of the season here, so now I have to wait untill spring to continue, I am hoping by the end of the summer I will be instructing at my DropZone. If anyone that reads this has not tried skydiving, all I can say is TRY IT YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED!! keep up the great webpage! till next time, HAPPY FLYING!!!!!! Andrew Postma <aroosterma@hotmail.com> Welland, Ontario Canada - Monday, January 04, 1999 at 2:35:54 PM (MST) Hi friend, A short word about fear. Fear responses are triggered by an old part of the brain (evolutionary that is) known as the amygdala. That jolt or frozen moment whereby we seem to lose time and even consciousness when you first jump out of an aircraft comes through the amygdala taking control of our bodies and parts of our brain before the sensory input make it to our frontal cortex. Once the signals reach our frontal cortex we are able to appraise the situation we are confronted by in a more rational manner. We need our amygdala to recognise danger. It helps us to deal with unfamiliar and thus potentially dangerous situations. However, on the second jump our amygdala knows it's been in this situation before so we are not frozen or debilitated as much as the first time we jumped. Has our fear been reduced? Probably not, only our reaction has changed. Thankfully, most sky divers continue to experience the fear but it does not overtake our minds and bodies. The fear remains but the shock or "frozen moment" is reduced. But, it can come back as sooon as we experience something new, such as a bag lock or streamer. The tragedy of someone jumping out without gear, I suggest, has little to do with fear. Complacency or a momentary loss of concentration is all that is needed to make this mistake. Great web site. We actually thought we were experienced rafters, having mastered the level three rivers in central California. Our experience second day our was thrilling and harrowing. the day was beautiful, later it rained, we were half way down the river. The river rose, the water became faster and the dips were now big deep drops. Not only was the raft filling with water, but the 2 young men in the kiyaks were swept away and were way ahead of us...so much for emergency pick up should one of us fall into the water. Needless to say the day was very "experience"filled. WE did survive and love to tell the story of how I fell out and the only thing my spouse could think of was...that he didn't know where anything was at homw!!!!!!!......... Our experienced guide later shared with us that we did very well as a team and that he estimated that several areas of our trip could have been classed as 4 plus and 5 rafting levels. We spent 2 weeks in Costa Rica and are planning to return again next year...1999. It was the greatest vacation and a wonderful experience... such hospitality. And living in Florida affords me unique opportunities - canoeing through the swamp, watching the sunset over the everglades, or diving some of our many shipwrecks. I have come looking for examples of adventure stories that are true, like featured here. I must say that I have found what I have been looking for. The reason for this is because I have been writing my own stories of things that have happened to me and am looking for direction of a sort. Thanks for creating that direction. Whenever I make post those stories, similar to the ones I have read, though more satirical, I will announce it. (the webpage featured is not my own, it is my friends and it needs more publicity.) Sharon <jsbrooks@shawneelink.com> Harrisburg, IL USA - Saturday, September 12, 1998 at 8:19:40 PM (MDT) All my life I have been terrified of the water, particularly the ocean. So, last year at 33 years old, I decided it was time to overcome that fear. I certainly didn't want to pass it along to my daughter. So, I did the most logical thing: I learned to scuba dive! It took over an hour to get my head completely under water, but once I did . . .WOW!!! I was amazed at this magnificent world that I had always been too afraid to venture into. In fact, I fell so in love with it that I am now working on my Advanced Scuba Certification and have joined REEF (Reef Environmental Education Foundation) in the hopes of doing fish identification survey dives. My daughter is even getting in the act. She snorkels while I dive and wants to get her Jr. Certification in two years when she turns twelve. Overcoming my fear not only opened my eyes to a new world, but it has given my daughter and me the opportunity to share some wonderful times together. I am counting on scuba to be our common ground when we go through her difficult adolescent years. Till then, I am just going to relax and enjoy watching her eyes light up when she sees a manatee or a sting ray (even though that first shark I saw did make me a little nervous!) Thanks for the info on your site. It has been amazing to finally live life instead of letting life live me. They took us up to 3000ft and I was the first one out of the plane. When I climbed out on the platform and the clouds were wizzing past my head the first thing I thougt was what am I doing?! The jump master gave me the go signal and I stepped off the plane. I grimaced as I began to count to 6. A violent jerk stopped me at 4 and then silence. After checking my canopy and making sure all was well, I actually started to relax. MY GOD WHAT A VIEW! The instructor radioed me to tell me I was over the drop site and he ask me to do some spirals. What a rush! After I came out of the spiral, I thought I heard some one calling my name. I glanced to my left and there was the jump master forming up on my left grinning at me. After a lot of good natured whooping it up he spiraled away from me. When I was at about 800 feet my instructor radioed me again to help get lined up for my landing. Trying my best, I followed his instructions...landing only 20 feet from the center of the drop zone. After I realized I was still alive I looked at the instructor and said,"Let's do it again!" But there were a few things the instructors failed to tell us. Like the air up there is 30 degrees colder. And the harness they put on you is so tight that by the end of the jump you are between 1 and 2 inches shorter. I would also advise putting sponges between your legs so as not to have black and blue marks from the harness (very painful). One more note...put your feet in front of you when you come in for the landing or else you will soon find out what grass tastes like! My jumpmaster had a camera mounted on his helmet to see our exits. Of course I screwed up and ended up backflipping instead of arching and the only thing I could think of was damn that was fun. On the ride home my friends were discussing of how I could have died so on and so on. All I could think of was that feeling of just being up there. I'm hooked all I can think about now is going back up. It just doesn't feel right being on the ground and I keep looking up at the clouds saying to myself man those clouds are low but there's probably some holes big enough to jump through. My first jump was on January 14, 1996 at around 11am,(I jumped out of Hemet Ca) it is the greatest thing I've ever done for myself. It was a tandem jump,I was not afraid at all I loved it I enjoy it so much that I went back in Febuary in Florida (Skydive Miami) this is where the movie "Drop Zone" was filmed, there I had the chance to do another tandem with some guys from South Africa, I forgot their names, they said that the year before then, they had won 5th place in the World Compenticions of formation dive. Later that year (June) I was in Las Vegas and I did it a third time and again I loved it and it's so weird because I've never felt fear at all not a single drop of fear. I plan to go for my fourth jump anytime in August. It's kind of expensive (I must have a video other wise my friends don't believe me: I guess because they don't have the guts to do something like this and I do.) I'm 17 and have recently fulfilled my life-long dream of sky diving. There's not much to say that hasn't already been said other than this: We are all united by something so special and so unique. You can call it a sense of adventure that surpasses fear, or you can call it a yearning in our souls to defy all the limits that have been set. But it means a lot to know that there are people out there who have a passion to live life to the extremes. So thanx to all you divers out there for living your dreams and encouraging others to share in the experience. What a way to celebrate! We had been planning to go for years now but we were in an automobile accident where she got severe whiplash and could not go. The following year I messed up my knees and it was very painful just to walk. That didn't stop us from finally acheiving our dream. I went through the AFF course and she was there all day long with me to give me support. She wanted to Tandem her first time out so we had to go back the following day to be able to make our first jump together. The staff at the DZ did a wonderful job at coordinating the Videographers, Jumpmasters and us being on the same plane. The people were the best. I will never be able to thank them enough for our FIRST jump a major sucess. It was the most exhilarating time in my life to date. I am currently working towards my A license and my wife is going to her AFF classes in the next few weeks. My only regret is that I waited until I was 40 years old to take up this most wonderful sport. So many Blue Skies under the bridge. I look at life in a whole new aspect now and I plan on continuing in the sport until all I can do is inspire others to take that first step because I know that their lives will be changed forever. Thanks for the information. April Perera <april_shine@yahoo.com> Charlottesville, VA - Monday, June 22, 1998 at 12:58:20 PM (MDT) First off I want to say what a great page you have here. I found it very interesting. Yesterday 06/20/98, I did my first skydive. I've always wanted to, but never got around to it. Then I met someone who lives in Daytona Beach, FL (Mat) and went to visit him for the weekend. He loves the air and is a pilot and skydiver, and he decided that we were going to go jump, his treat. I was really nervous about the whole thing at first, but when we got there (Skydive DeLand) and I started talking to the people I relaxed a little more. I was doing a tandem, and we were signing the manifest and waiting for the plane to come back. While waiting I was amazed at how friendly and layed back everyone was. I met with the guy I was going to jump with (Pedro), and he got me all suited up and told me about the body position. The plane still hadn't come back, and my nervousness slowly started creeping back. I was afraid that if we didn't go soon I would wimp out. Pedro came outside all suited up and said the plane was about to land and that we should go wait for it. Everyone on the manifest was waiting, and they were all joking with me about the jump, and the plane finally landed. We all got on the plane, I think it was twin otter, and we took off. I started to relax again once we were in the air. Mat was trying to get me to relax, and next thing I know the doors open, and people are just flying out of the plane. Finally it was my turn, the thing I liked about the tandem was that I wasn't really the one jumping, Pedro was. If I had to jump I don't know if I could actually do it. 1..2...3 We were out of the plane. At first my stomach went up into my chest, and just as soon as it went it came back. I got the shoulder tap, arms went out. I screamed all the way down. It was so exhilerating. Then Pedro opened the parachute, and it was like we just stopped in mid-air. At first I was scared, because I dropped lower than where he was at, and I thought I would fall. I adjusted the leg part of the harness so I sitting, and just looked around. It was such a beautiful sight. Then we got to spin aroud in spirals and all that fun stuff. I wish it had lasted longer, next thing I knew it was time to land. I almost went again right after that jump but it was too expensive, and they had to close anyway because of all the wildfires around. Instead I asked how much the AFF course was, and I'll hopefully be doing that by the end of next month! I can't wait until then. When I do that I'll let everyone know! Blue skies till then! I was realy impressed with the information and story content, especially on first time jumping. I have since sent links to this site for several of my friends who are now considering skydiving. This information really helps me convince them that their feelings and fears are normal. Of course after that first jump the fears don't matter, just how fast can you get back on a plane for your second jump! I will be visiting here frequently for updates and new stories. Blue Skies! I like to try out diffrent tour companies and I have some positive and negative info for you if needed. Quick story: Sky Diving in Arthor, Ontario. Canada For a company that bosts the history that they do I would strongly advise against anyone who is interested in this sport to dive from this shool. With an average of 1-3 people being sent to the hospital each day of opperation (No Joke) Me being one with a 5 part multiple fracture requiring reconstructive bone sergery because my jump master "Forgot" to check my static line to see if it was free of my arm or not. On the other side of things our large competiter based out of forester falls, Ontario called "Winderness Tours" is an amazing ride for white water Trekers. Fear is something that gets in our way and can be very difficult to overcome. Unfortunately, I think everyone needs to come up with their own way to defeat the fear in their lives. However, maybe I can help a little. Why don't you think about the following questions and see if they help you determine a possible course of action. 1. Of what are you afraid? Don't say, "skydiving." What about skydiving frightens you? Is it the fear of possible death? Is it the plunge from the plane? I think it is important to know what is behind our fear. 2. If you were to skydive again, do you believe you would do everything in your power to prevent whatever it is that you fear? 3. If you were to skydive again, what exactly would you do to prevent that which you fear? Figure out every step you would take. Think about each possible outcome and how you would affect that outcome. 4. If you took all of the precautions mentioned in #3, what are the chances that you would suffer the fate that causes your fright? 5. Do you believe the risk is worth the benefit? 6. Do you still feel that skydiving is something you should do? If after answering these questions you still feel the need to talk, don't hesitate to send me email or post another message in my guestbook. I'm willing to help however I can. I just wish I had a magic formula to give you. Ah well... Life is sometimes a struggle, but sometimes it is the struggle itself that defines the value of our accomplishments. The tandem was my first, then I advanced to static lines. Skydiving has always intrigued me. But after 6 static line jumps, I really became nervous, nervous to the point of not being able to even go to the DZ. I realize a certain amount of fear has been instilled in us as humans to protect us. But my fear is keeping me from enjoying a sport which I truly love. When I spend time at the DZ not intending to jump for the day, I can't get enough of the excitement, I want to jump, but when it comes down to doing it, I chicken out. My friends at the DZ are very understanding and encouraging, but I can't get rid of the butterflys, or get them, as the quote goes, "to fly in formation" I want to overcome my fear and enjoy the sport of skydiving, but how do I do it? If anyone has any advise, I would appreciate it. Thank you for your time, Hannah. Hannah <laj4@tiger.uofs.edu> PA - Monday, April 06, 1998 at 11:28:11 PM (MDT) Ah Yes! ADVENTURE!!! It is something I would like to do everyday. Falling at 125mph, hearing nothing but the rush of air, feeling the pressure of the air agaist my body, it was the most exhilarating feeling I have every experienced! Time to pull chute---quiet and the feeling of floating, I never wanted to come down. I want to get my Aff, then I can go on my own and who knows, I might even start competing or teaching the sport myself. My biggest adventure has been taking up kayaking at the age of 56(a couple? of years ago). No, not whitewater, just flatwater. We live near a big lake with an 800 mile shoreline so there's plenty of places to paddle. I would recommend this to anyone as a wonderful stress-buster, good exercise, and if you paddle up into the coves, away from the motorboats and jet skis, there's peace, quiet and lovely solitude.I use a Keowee kayak, weighs about 35lbs. and I can get it on and off my car myself, which is good. I do most of my paddling alone, just because I enjoy it that way. sue <sosoyars@yahoo.com> south hill, va usa - Thursday, March 19, 1998 at 9:27:53 PM (MST) This post is in reply to Tara's post below. Tara, that is a decision you will have to make for yourself. I fully understand your dilemma, but it isn't my place to give you advice one way or the other. Having said that, maybe I can give you a little bit of information that will help you make your decision. Skydiving is a dangerous sport. Accidents can happen. However, if you look at all the skydiving accidents you will see some interesting trends. The vast majority of skydiving deaths are caused by human error or plane crashes. While some accidents start because of a malfunction those divers usually would have survived if they followed the rules and used the proper equipment. Most skydivers who triple check their equipment, follow the rules, use the proper equipment, and drill every dive live a long life. Most skydivers who die were using bad equipment, doing something stupid, or not reacting properly to the situation. I firmly believe that anyone who has ever wanted to skydive should absolutely try it. However, you must make that decision fully aware of the facts. You must consider the risk and figure out if the potential benefit is worth the risk. I am sorry I can't give you any more help than that, but this is a difficult question to answer. If you still have trouble making your choice, maybe you should start with something a little less dangerous. Good luck making your choice. Carl P. The thing that I really like about it is the fact that it is a moderated page. Jerry <montanah@u.washington.edu> Seattle, washington U.S.A - Saturday, February 07, 1998 at 5:46:57 PM (MST) In response to Andrew's post below: The medical requirements are fairly simple. You can't have a bad heart, or anything that may cause you to go unconsious when exposed to high levels of stress. You have to be able to see, but glasses are fine. (I imagine there is probably a drop zone somewhere that helps blind people skydive.) If you intend to try anything other than a tandem skydive, you will need to be able to use both arms and both legs. (Once again, I imagine there is a drop zone somewhere that works with people missing legs or arms.) I suggest you read the section of my site titled "Learning to Skydive." All the answers are there. Also, on the page "Cost of Skydiving" in the "Learning to Skydive" section, there is a link to the World DZ Price List. That list contains contact information for most of the drop zones anywhere in the world. It is a good place to find drop zones near you. --------------------- In response to Suzy's post below: Thanks for your post! Don't ever feel stupid about leaving a post here! Terminal velocity varies depending on the weight, size, and position of the skydiver's body, jump suit, and parachute. However, an average would be between 110-120 miles per hour in a stable "arch" position. If the skydiver fell head first and kept their body stright, they could achive between 180-200 miles per hour. In 1960 Capt. Joeseph W. Kittinger, Jr., USAF, set the world records for fastest terminal velocity and longest freefall when he leaped from a balloon at 102,000 feet. He was wearing an oxygen suit that looked similar to today's space suits. He had a small 6' parachute trailing behind him to keep his body stable. During the 4 1/2 minutes it took for him to fall to 18,000 feet, he attained a terminal velocity of 702 miles per hour. Carl P. Andrew Heller <moncapitan@hotmail.com> Valley Stream, NY USA - Thursday, February 05, 1998 at 10:34:33 AM (MST) Hello, I wasn't going to leave a comment because I felt stupid seeing as I've only just started skydiving, but loads of you have said you like to hear from "first timers" so here goes... I did my first jump (static line) in Cornwall (Yes, England!) on 19th July 1997, it was cool, but after 3 months of waiting (due to bad weather) it wasn't what I expected because I'd built it up so much. I didn't do my 2nd jump until October (Nottingham) and that was really cool I was so much more aware of what was going on. Anyway I did some dummy pulls, not really sure that I was ever going to make myself do freefall. For a little while I was really lucky with the weather then there was about 2 months when I kept going and the weather was um.. shi... very bad.. I was sick of it. Then, on the 1st February, 1998 I did my last dummy pull and, on the last lift of the day, my first freefall!(gorgeous view). I thought I could imagine what it was going to feel like, from doing static lines, but I was soooo wrong! It was waaay better than anything I could have imagined. Sometimes I wish that I'd already done loads of jumps so I could start learning to do stuff in freefall, but then again I think wow I've got all that, and the stuff before that, to look forward to! Suzy Leigh <leighsj@aston.ac.uk> Birmingham, England - Thursday, February 05, 1998 at 8:58:26 AM (MST) I thought teaching EH (emotionally handicapped) kids was challenging until my best friend decided to jump. I went too! Now teaching is a breeze, and my kids loved that I did something so cool for someone so old ( I'm 26 )!! If there is anything extreme you think the youth of today should know just write!! P.S.I start my AFF courses next month. I would like to know what free-fall velocity the average skydiver will reach during a jump, and what the record is for the maximum velocity. Thanks. His grandmother supplied us with the timeshare we stayed in for most of the trip. Thanks Nathan. Carl P. If anyone wanting information on surfing in Costa Rica please feel free to E-Mail me and I will give you the scoop. This summer I will also try to get Carl out on a surf board so he can see what he has been missing, and out in a hang-glider. Chow for now Nate. I'm wondering if there are any other pilots who are into Adventure flying? I also Scuba Dive and Downhill ski, and Mtn Bike. See Ya Down River Mark Mark Dobrzanski <dob@fred.net> Hagerstown, Maryland Washington - Sunday, January 11, 1998 at 3:24:13 PM (MST) Hi, just wanted to say how nice it is to relive skidiving through everyones eyes again. It has been about 4 years since I was jumping at the Bong airport up in superior wisconson. I did some fantastic jumps from 12 thousand saw some awesome sites from up above. I also got to jump with a hansome teacher, Mark and we did a jump with the guy from the radio station to promote a childrens charity. All and all it was GREAT just like Tony the tiger says. I even learned 2 ways to pack a chute, pro and flat. I still dream flying and hope to do it again. Wonderful web page, thanks for letting me share your mail. thanks and stay high Darlene (the rabbit) Punpur from Canada DARLENE PUNPUR <apunpur@tbel.net> thunder bay , ontario Canada - Wednesday, January 07, 1998 at 6:28:20 PM (MST) Since this guestbook has grown so large, I have broken it down into multiple pages.
