To build your web site, you will need a minimum of a web browser and an FTP client. However, to build it well you will also need a telnet client and both Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE) and Netscape Navigator (NN).
It is very important that you have both MSIE and NN. Microsoft and Netscape refuse to make their software behave the same way. That means that if you create a web page that looks really awesome in one of their browsers, it probably looks lousy in the other. I have heard many web developers say that as long as your site looks good in NN then you are safe because most people use NN. However, I have been watching the statistics. More and more people are starting to use MSIE. Of all of the people who visit this site, less than 50% use NN, and around 30% use MSIE.
There is another browser you need to have access to. That is a browser called Lynx. Unless you have the Unix operating system on your computer you probably don't have Lynx. However, with a telnet client and a shell account you will be able to use Lynx. I will explain what a shell account is in the Hosts section, but for now just make sure you get a hold on a copy of a telnet client.
If you are using Windows 95, then you already have a telnet client. Go to the Start menu and click Run. In the dialog that comes up, type "telnet" (without the quotes). There's your telnet client.
If you are not using Windows 95, you may need to download a telnet client. I am not too familiar with software for other operating systems. I suggest you call your ISP (internet service provider) and ask them for one. Most ISPs provide software like that for their customers, but the customer usually has to ask for it.
Go to selecting your host.
